18th JANUARY 2012 PASSING OF 2 CHAMPIONS
Two former Empire Champions of the 1950's and 60's, Heavyweight Joe Bygraves of Jamaica and Welterweight Brian Curvis of Wales passed away in January of this year. Joe won the Empire Heavyweight Title in June 1956 by defeating Tongan, Kitione Lave and held it for 17 months before losing it to Joe Erskine of Wales. He boxed and even beat some of the best boxers in the World, holding wins over British Champions Henry Cooper and Jack Gardner, European Champion Dick Richardson and losing on points to George Chuvalo and future World Champions, Willie Pastrano and Ingemar Johannson. After retiring from the ring in 1965 he became a farmer and, reputedly had the closest farm to London, at Stanmore in Middlesex. He returned to his native Jamaica late in his life. Brian Curvis won the Empire Heavyweight Title in 1960 from Australian George Barnes and it was a Title he was never to lose in the ring. He boxed and beat some of the best welterweights of his time including Jose Stable, Gaspar Ortega, Guy Sumlin and Dave Charnley, the former Lightweight Champion. However he was unsuccessful against the great Emile Griffith for the World Title losing on points in 1964, one of only of only 4 defeats, none to a British boxer, in a career of 41 contests. Two very fine Champions, and men, who graced the ring with their presence.
28th OCTOBER 2011 WBO LIGHTHEAVYWEIGHT BARNSTORMER
WBO World Lightheavyweight Championship Nathan Cleverley's narrow points win over Commonwealth Champion Tony Bellew at Liverpool's Echo Arena on October 15th more than lived up to expectation. As with Steve Molitor's close win in defence of his IBF World Championship Superbantamweight Championship in September last year against then Commonwealth Champion Jason Booth, this contest between former and current Commonwealth Champions demonstrated the quality of our Champion. With Joseph Agbeko's mandated rematch for the IBF World Bantamweight Championship scheduled for December and the possible British 'contest of the year' between Liam Walsh and Paul Appleby on September 30th for our Superfeatherweight Championship, the CBC can be rightly proud of the quality of its' Champions and the majority of its' Championship contests.
28th OCTOBER 2011 REMATCH FOR OBODAI SAI
Following the conclusion of the BBB of C's disciplinary processes against Referee Mark Green, as a result of which he received a reprimand, the Directors of the CBC have voted to mandate a rematch between current Lightmiddleweight Champion Jamie Cox and former Champion Obodai Sai following their controversial contest in September. Terms for negotiations/pursebids will be posted on our website shortly and the contest should take place by the end of March 2012.
28th OCTOBER 2011 CBC ANNUAL GENERAL MEETING
The CBC AGM will take place in London on 7th and 8th December 2011.
22nd SEPTEMBER 2011 LIGHTWEIGHT CHAMPIONSHIP POSTPONED
GEORGE ASHIE having suffered a viral illness, the vacant Lightweight Championship scheduled for 10th September in Accra between Ashie and INNICENT ANYANWU is postponed.
13th SEPTEMBER 2011 LIGHTMIDDLEWEIGHT CONTROVERSY
Champion Obodai's loss to Jamie Cox in London on 9th September aroused great controversy in respect of the refereeing of Mark Green and the points decision in favour of Cox from the 3 judges. Complaints have been received from members of the public as well as 2 formal complaints from the manager of Sai and the Chairman of the Ghana Boxing Authority. These are now under consideration by the Directors of the CBC. (see RESULTS below).
5th SEPTEMBER 2011 BOOTH VACATES SUPERBANTAM CHAMPIONSHIP
Connections for Jason Booth have advised the CBC he will vacate the Superbantam Championship as he will be unable to meet his defence requirements. Approval will be given for a match between Carl Frampton of Northern Ireland and Australian Champion Mark Quon to be for the vacant Title (see FORTHCOMING CHAMPIONSHIPS)
