Since 1954 the Commonwealth Boxing Council in its various forms has regulated and sanctioned Commonwealth Championships.
Future world champions like Hogan Kid Bassey of Nigeria through Lennox Lewis to Carl Froch of England. National heroes like Ghana’s Floyd Robertson of Ghana through Sir Henry Cooper of England to Australia's Paul Ferrari and Modest Napunyi of Kenya. All have held our prestigious championship, a gateway to top international class. The CBC also provides a forum for discussion and mutually beneficial inter-action between the various national boxing federations that make up the membership and is one of the most respected championship organizations in the world today.
IBF World, and former Commonwealth, Supermiddleweight Champion Carl Froch was presented with the 2012 Dennie Mancini Trophy by British Boxing Board of Control Midlands Area Council member Bob Rice, on behalf of the CBC. Carl was unable to be present at the BBB of C Awards Dinner on 16h November to receive it then, due as he was to defend his IBF Title the following night, which he did successfully. Our Director David Roden arranged for his longtime friend and colleague Bob, who is also a friend of Carl, to present it personally at Carl’s home. The year ends with the formal recognition by the Commonwealth Secretariat of the Commonwealth Boxing Council, following the successful application made by the CBC to the Secretariat for acceptance as a ‘Civil Society Organization’, and the historic three Championship bill at London’s ExCel Arena on 15th December promoted by Frank Warren (see RESULTS).
2013 promises to start with a bang with eagerly awaited contests at Heavyweight between David Price and Tyson Fury, and at Superbantamweight between Carl Frampton and Scott Quigg expected to take place by the end of March, both probably the most exciting matchings to be made at any weight in Britain right now.
The Commonwealth Boxing Council, now recognized by the Commonwealth Secretariat as an accredited 'Commonwealth Civil Society' held its' AGM at the Headquarters of the Secretariat at Marlborough House, Pall Mall, London on 27th and 28th November 2012. Following on from the reported controversy arising from Referee Ian John Lewis’ stoppage of Enzo Maccarinelli in his challenge against Ovill McKenzie last Friday 9th in Liverpool, the Commonwealth Boxing Council is currently awaiting a provisional report from the British Boxing Board of Control, and will consider whether or not any further action is necessary, when the Directors next meet at the Commonwealth Secretariat in London on 27th and 28th November.
Following his defeat by majority decision in a WBA International Championship contest against fellow Ghanaian Emmanuel Tagoe in Accra last Saturday 10th, the Commonwealth Lightweight Championship automatically becomes vacant in accordance with CBC Regulation 2.10.
The first match sanctioned by the CBC between 2 approved contenders, and in accordance with CBC Regulations, shall be recognized as being for the vacant Championship.
Purse bids for manadatory defences in the Superfeatherweight and Flyweight divisions heve been put out, and will be opened on 27th November 2012. See NOTICES.
Shane Cameron of New Zealand having failed to defend the Title since it was won last year, and with an apparent commitment to box for an IBO 'World'Title, this Championship has been declared vacant.
The Champion was required to defend the Title by the end of September 2012, a deadline ordered by the CBC Directors following their last meeting in April.
The first matching, approved by the CBC and in accordance with CBC Rules will be recognized as being for the vacant Title.
A decision concerning the long overdue mandatory defence by Jamie Cox against Obodai Sai is anticipated within the next few days. The CBC may be faced with a choice of declaring the Title vacant or ordering a further purse offer bid.
The voluntary all-Scottish defence by Champion Lee McAllister against Eddie Doyle in Aberdeen, scheduled for tonight (19th October) is postponed due to an injury sustained by the Champion.
Purse bids will be put out for the mandatory defence by Kevin Satchell against Namibias Abmerk Shindjuu shortly, for opening on 27th November by the President.
Dennis Hobson, manager of Jamie McDonnell has confirmed to the CBC that he has relinquished the Bantamweight Championship in order to concentrate on his IBF World Title ambitions.
The winners of the forthcoming vacant Title match at bantam, and the voluntary defence at Superfeather (see Forthcoming Championships) will be required to waive 6 months defence period grace and defend as required by the CBC against the winner of the Final Eliminator in Accra on 11th November, and Final Eliminator winner Logan McGuinness of Canada respectively.
The Commonwealth Flyweight Championship will not be at stake in the British Championship contest contest taking place in Liverpool on 13th October between Champion Kevin Satchell and Chris Edwards. If Edwards is successful the Title will be declared vacant. If Satchell is successful the CBC Board of Directors will consider an appropriate course of action relevant to the mandatory contender status of Abmerk Shindjuu of Namibia.
